1924 - 2024 : Celebrating 100 Years of Charles Aznavour

Six years have passed since Charles Aznavour left us on 01 October 2018, just one month after delivering his final concert in Japan. Yet, his presence feels more vibrant than ever. A global icon with a career spanning over 70 years, Aznavour's voice and timeless songs continue to echo in the hearts of millions. As we reflect on his life and countless achievements, we are reminded of the lasting impact he had on both French and international music, making him one of the most beloved artists of the 20th century.

His early life in France

Charles Aznavour, born Shahnour Vaghinag Aznavourian on 22 May 1924 in Paris, was the child of Armenian immigrants. Raised in a culturally rich household, his parents had a deep passion for the arts, which ignited Aznavour’s interest in performance from an early age. He began his career at the tender age of nine, taking small acting roles, but his real breakthrough came through music.

Aznavour's early career in France was marked by significant mentorship and collaboration with some of the country’s most iconic figures in the entertainment industry. One of his earliest and most important supporters was Édith Piaf, the legendary French singer. Piaf discovered Aznavour in the 1940s and invited him to tour with her, opening the door to a much wider audience. Piaf not only mentored him but also helped him refine his songwriting skills and stage presence. Their collaboration helped Aznavour break into the French music scene, setting the foundation for his later success.

During this period, Aznavour established himself as a unique voice in French chanson, known for his deeply emotional and often autobiographical lyrics. Songs like "Je m’voyais déjà" and "La Bohème" became classics, resonating with audiences through their exploration of themes such as love, heartbreak, and nostalgia. By the 1950s, he had become a well-known figure in French music, poised to take his talents to the world stage.

International career and global legacy

Aznavour’s appeal quickly transcended the borders of France, and he soon became an international star. Singing in multiple languages—French, English, Spanish, Italian, German, and Armenian—allowed him to connect with diverse audiences worldwide. His emotional delivery and universal themes made him a beloved figure across continents.

Aznavour’s international career was marked by performances in over 90 countries, including the United States, where he performed at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall in New York. His hit single "She," released in 1974, topped charts in the UK, broadening his appeal in the English-speaking world. He also found success in Latin America, performing sold-out concerts and recording Spanish versions of his hits. Throughout his career, Aznavour collaborated with numerous international artists, including Liza Minnelli, Frank Sinatra, and Elton John, cementing his status as a global icon.

Australia also embraced Aznavour, where he performed several times over the years, most notably in the 1970s. His scheduled Farewell tour in 2017 was highly anticipated but was canceled due to health concerns. However, his legacy in Australia, like elsewhere, continues to resonate.

Aznavour passed away on 01 October 2018 at the age of 94, but his legacy endures. His music continues to be celebrated by fans of all ages, and his influence on the global music scene remains undeniable. Since his death, his contribution to French culture and his lasting impact worldwide can be seen in many tribute concerts, documentaries and movies.
