World Environment Day: #FashionableDisaster
Wednesday 5 June 2024

to 9pm

Française, 319 Young Street WAYVILLE 5034
World Environment Day, held every 5 June, brings attention on the pressing issue that is global
warming. This year, the Alliance Française d'Adelaide aims to raise awareness on one of the biggest environmental challenges:
Fashion Sustainability.
Close to 56 million tonnes of clothes are sold every year. In Europe, the amount purchased has almost doubled since the year 2000. Australia is the second-biggest textile consumer per capita in the world after the United States. However, textiles are the second most polluting industry in the world, after oil. Highlighting the several environmental issues related to Fast Fashion is therefore crucial.
We will start our encounter with the screening of the 2021 French documentary, Fast Fashion: les dessous de la mode à bas prix (Fast Fashion: the Real Price of Low Cost Fashion), directed by Gilles Bovon and Édouard Perrin.
Following the screening, we will engage in a discussion around a glass of wine with a panel lead by Prof Angeline
Russo,
owner of local artisanal brand Fleurieu Made, Amanda
Blair,
founder of Dulcie’s Bus vintage shop and Josephine
McKenzie,
PhD Candidate at UniSA researching environmental sustainability and gender equality in the Australian fashion industry.
